The State University of New York at Oswego, also known as Oswego State and SUNY Oswego, is a public university in Oswego, which is a city in the US state of New York, serving as the county seat of Oswego County, housing within its limits a number of more than 18 000 people, as estimated during the 2000 census.
The university was established in 1861 and was founded by Edward Austin Sheldon, first starting as Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School, being elevated from a normal school to a degree-granting teachers' college, in 1942, by the New York Legislature. It offers its students more than 110 majors, minors, cooperative and graduate programs, that lead to Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Education, Master of Science and Certificate of Advanced Study.
SUNY Oswego's athletic teams are known as the Lakers and they compete in NCAA D III, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference for most of the 23 varsity sports, in which they participate, except women's ice hockey, for which they play in the ECAC West, as that sport is not offered by the SUNYAC. Their distinctive colors are Hunter Green and Golden Yellow.
